Nissan to Expand Production in Thailand

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
nissan
RyanThomas asked:

Nissan, the third largest Japanese car manufacturer, announced that they will expand their production of export vehicles in Thailand. This is in connection with the company’s aim to expand its use of the country as a low-cost production base. Wages in the country is significantly lower than in Japan that is why the company is looking to make bigger profits if they expand their production in the said country.

The company announced that they will be exporting Thai-made Navara to more than 100 countries around the world starting August this year. Nissan’s Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn made the announcement but did not specify the number of Navaras they are planning to produce in Thailand. The Navara is a one-ton pickup truck produced by the company since 1986 and is also called the Nissan Frontier in other markets.

Nissan will be following the steps taken by General Motors, Toyota and Ford which have already stepped up production in Thailand. These three car manufacturers have already taken advantage of the low production cost in Thailand as well as for the tax breaks in the country.

Nissan has earmarked a sum of about $911 million in the expansion of their production based in Thailand. The company aims to double production output in the country which would mean that they will be producing about 200,000 vehicles in the Southeast Asian country by the end of 2008. The expansion to be carried out by Nissan will make Thailand their third largest Asian production base behind Japan and China.

“The costs in Thailand are very competitive,” said Ghosn. “Thailand is the other export base that we have built outside of Japan.”

The Japanese car manufacturer trails Toyota and General Motors in terms of production output in Thailand. During the first quarter of this year, Japanese car manufacturers have collectively exported 2,637 units of automobiles from Thailand. That figure corresponds to an increase of 1.7 percent compared to the first quarter of 2006.

In November last year, Nissan started exporting the Nissan strut -equipped Tiida, which is also known as the Nissan Versa, into Australia from Thailand. The export of the said car into the Australian market is a good start for the company in terms of expanding their production base in Thailand. Aside from fully assembled vehicles, Nissan is also planning to export 11.5 billion baht worth of Thai-made auto parts. That plan would make Thailand the second largest Asian production base of auto parts for Nissan, second only to Japan.

Due to the expansion of their production base in Thailand, the country’s economy has grown by 4.3 percent during the first quarter of the year. Exports from the country increased by 21 percent last month compared to May of 2006. The increase in export has given the country an income of $13.1 billion. The increase in export is led by automobiles and auto parts which shows an increase of 32 percent for the month.

While the plans are already in place, Ghosn is worried about the current political situation in Thailand. Following the ousting of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, protesters have gathered to call for the resignation of army chief Sondhi Boonyarataklin. “For a car manufacturer heavily invested in Thailand, it’s not sufficient to have just a good export base,” said Ghosn of the current situation. “We’re following, just like anybody else, the situation with a lot of attention, hoping that it will stabilize very soon.”

Nissan to Introduce Diesel Powered Maxima

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009
nissan
RyanThomas asked:

The recent spikes in the price of gasoline have forced car buyers to look for more fuel efficient vehicles which in turn affected car manufacturers. Automakers are now focusing on the development of smaller cars which are considered more fuel efficient than large vehicles such as sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks.

Car manufacturers like the Toyota Motor Corporation, the Honda Motor Corporation and the Ford Motor Company have developed and produced fuel efficient vehicles using the hybrid technology. While hybrid vehicles boast of a good fuel economy, they are priced much higher than conventional gasoline engined vehicles.

While hybrid vehicles are popular in the United States, in the European car market, clean diesel engines are viewed as a better answer to the growing threat of global warming. German car companies such as Mercedes Benz and Audi have been developing and producing clean diesel engines. Following the steps of these European brands is a Japanese brand - Nissan. The car company’s chief executive officer recently announced that they will be offering a clean diesel engined car in the United States in the near future. This is an effort to address the growing demand for fuel efficient vehicles which are also environment friendly.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced just recently that they will be releasing a diesel powered Maxima in the United States auto market by the year 2010. The announcement made auto industry experts to predict that Nissan will be offering vehicles which closely resemble those made by German car manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

Aside from the United States, Nissan will also release the diesel Maxima in other countries like Japan and China. Currently, diesel-powered Nissan vehicles with or without Nissan vent visors are made available by the Asian brand in the European car market.

In developing a clean diesel engine for future vehicles to be released in the global market, Nissan is expected to solicit the help of its partner, the French car manufacturer Renault. The development and subsequent release of clean diesel engines by Nissan is a step towards meeting stricter emission standards that will take effect in the near future. These technologically advanced diesel engines are also considered to be Nissan’s effort to protect the environment amidst growing concerns about the threat of global warming.

“Nissan is fully engaged in reducing emissions and improving fuel economy and efficiency. Launching a clean diesel engine in the U.S. will offer customers the benefits of fuel economy, CO2 reduction and a satisfying, fun-to-drive performance that is a hallmark of the Nissan brand,” says Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn. “You can expect to see more diesel engines in our product lineup in Europe, Japan, North America and China by fiscal year 2010,” added Ghosn.

In Europe, diesel engines are increasingly becoming popular. That is why Nissan is currently offering the said engine in that region. New technologies made these diesel engines perform better and produce less greenhouse gases. In the United States, diesel engines have received a bad reputation in the past decades which makes them not as popular as gas electric hybrid vehicles which seems to be the current trend in the industry.

Last year, Nissan revealed their “Green Program” which focuses on the reduction of greenhouse gas emission. This is one of the major steps being taken by the Asian brand to support the effort of the United States government and a large portion of its citizens to become energy independent.

I need to replace a 2005 nissan altima 2.5 drivers side mirror, the whole assembly. Is there any trustworthy sites I can go to for this type of mirror and have it painted at the same place then shipped to me for one price?
I guess it would be easier….but I’ve never actually had to take anything to have it pained so…? How much is it to get a part such as this painted, and how long does it usually take?

Nissan’s 2008 Power Trio: Upgraded, Enhanced

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009
nissan
KatieJones asked:

To make its Power Trio more influential, Nissan Motors entertained significant upgrades and enhancements for it. The Power Trio - composed of the Titan, Pathfinder and the Armada - is delivered by the automaker not only to attract enthusiasts but to make these aficionados succumb to its excellence.

Upgrades and enhancements include the addition of the new Titan Long Wheelbase King Cab and Crew Cab models, a new 5.6-liter V8 engine for the Pathfinder, and new exterior and interior designs for the Armada. The three new 2008 Nissan vehicles are scheduled to be available at Nissan dealers nationwide beginning in spring this year.

“The addition of the Titan Long Wheelbase models and the first-ever V8 engine ever offered in the 22-year history of Pathfinder expand the available choices for buyers of these two popular vehicles,” said Larry Dominique, the vice president of Product Planning for Nissan North America, Inc.

Dominique added, “The extensive makeover of Armada, which has topped J.D. Power and Associates’ APEAL study for the Large SUV class in 2005 and 2006, adds up to an even more attractive, more premium and more complete Armada package for 2008 – one that we think will continue to make Armada stand out in the full-size SUV class.”

Modifications were not only limited to improving Nissan antenna masts and other parts accessories. The fact that the auto industry is plagued with so many rivals and burdened by notable fluctuations, Nissan intends to improve its lineup to get a rewarding share of the market.

The 2008 Nissan Titan is offered in four models - XE, SE, PRO-4X and LE; in 4×2 and 4×4 drive configurations; in two body styles - King Cab and Crew Cab; four bed sizes - 5’5”, 6’5”, 7’ and 8’; and with the Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) capability. It also features freshened styling, a powerful 5.6-liter DOHC Endurance V8 engine which is rated at 317 horsepower and 385 lb-ft torque, 5-speed automatic transmission and utmost towing capacity.

The well-liked Nissan Pathfinder expands its lineup to cover a new 300-plus horsepower 5.6-liter V8, the first V8 offered in its 22-year history in the United States market. This more powerful option offers a significant increase in torque, rated at 300-plus lb-ft, to achieve 7,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity. Other alterations include exterior styling and refined interior. The Revised Nissan Navigation System with 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive (available on LE only) is now integrated to the vehicle.

The 2008 Nissan Armada also comes with new colors and styling, more luxurious amenities and enhanced car technology. The vehicle also features new option packages. Notable auto technology advancements include the Intelligent Key with twist start, Bluetooth® hands-free phone system, Bose® sound system with 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive and 3rd row speakers and amplifier, Nissan Navigation system with an XM NavTraffic™ system with real-time traffic information, and an 8.0-inch screen for the optional DVD Entertainment Package.

“The 2008 model year is already shaping up to be a tremendous year for Nissan with the previously announced Altima Coupe and all-new Rogue crossover SUV – and now new Titan, Pathfinder and Armada,” said Dominique. “Attendees at the Chicago Auto Show will have five great new reasons to visit the Nissan display.”

How much is a normal weekly gas bill for a Nissan Armada?

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Josh asked:

I’m in need of a new car and I’m hoping to be getting one around June. I’ve been looking at a few cars but the one that I really want is the Nissan Armada. I like the size of the car and it’s comfortable to sit in and it’s a smooth drive. What should I be expecting to pay for gas though?

What vehicle compares to the Armada? I was something relatively close in size or slightly smaller.

Nissan Pushes Lithium-ion Battery Development

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009
nissan
RyanThomas asked:

Nissan’s Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn recently claimed that the Japanese car manufacturer is working on the development of an advanced lithium-ion battery for automotive application. The said battery packs are being seen as the key component to the development of practical electric cars as well as gas-electric hybrid vehicles.

Ghosn also announced that Nissan and its Alliance partner Renault are developing a $3,000 car. The econocar will be introduced in the Indian market. It is expected that Tata Motors, Nissan’s fiercest rival in India, will come up first with a car worth $3,000. Nissan is expected to follow soon after Tata unveils its low-priced car.

The demand for fuel efficient and environment friendly vehicles has led car manufacturers to develop advanced batteries for automotive application as hybrid vehicles are the most popular green vehicle. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used on common gizmos like laptops and cell phones.

A lithium-ion battery weighs less than a nickel-metal hydride battery which is now being used by hybrid vehicles. Aside from being lighter than nickel-metal hydride batteries, Li-ion batteries can store more power. The problem that auto manufacturers are facing is to design a Li-ion battery which can stand the rigorous demand of automotive application.

Nissan is currently trailing Japanese rivals Toyota and Honda in terms of hybrid sales. In fact, it was only earlier this year that Nissan started marketing a hybrid vehicle in the form of the Nissan Altima Hybrid. But the hybrid Altima uses a hybrid drivetrain designed by Toyota. Nissan’s own hybrid vehicle is expected to be introduced to the market by the turn of the decade.

Ghosn believes that if they are successful in developing a practical Li-ion battery pack for their hybrid vehicles, they can close the gap between them and Honda and Toyota. “We continue on the lithium ion battery. We think for us it’s a competitive advantage,” said Ghosn in a recent interview. “We have a lot of technology is this area, and we think this is going to be very helpful, not only for hybrids but also for electric cars.”

Although demand for gas-electric hybrid vehicles is steadily increasing, Ghosn pointed out that Nissan is aiming to develop a fully electric powered vehicle in the future. And they would only succeed in developing an electric vehicle if they have an advanced power storage device. The Li-ion battery that Nissan is developing will complement other Nissan parts even the small Nissan suspension bushing.

“If you have an efficient battery for a hybrid, why not go all the way and go for electric cars? It has zero emissions of anything,” said Ghosn.

Electric cars are the ideal solution to the growing pollution problem and increasing price of gasoline. One problem though that auto manufacturers are facing is the cost of production of electric cars. Another problem is the issue about recharging an electric vehicle’s battery pack. Although these vehicles can be charged plugging it into a common household socket, it takes time before the battery is fully recharged. Another problem for automakers is how the public will react to electric cars.

“We said from the beginning, we need to develop all the technologies,” said Ghosn stressing that hybrid vehicle is the only solution to the problems faced by the auto industry. “We can’t afford to squeeze any one of them: hybrid, fuel cell, electric, diesel, biofuel. Because we still don’t know how the market will react.”

Qashqai: Nissan’s Clean Diesel Vehicle

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009
nissan
RyanThomas asked:

The demand for cleaner cars is growing steadily and car manufacturers are rising to the occasion by developing and producing environment friendly cars. In the United States, the popular technology used on clean cars is gas-electric hybrid technology. These vehicles make use of an electric motor to provide additional power to the vehicle.

Meanwhile, in Europe, diesel engines are the current trend in “green” car technology. It is so popular in the continent that even luxury cars manufactured by European car manufacturers are equipped with diesel engines.

Asian car manufacturers on the other hand are using the hybrid technology widely. Toyota and Honda are currently leading the hybrid auto revolution in the United States. While the two biggest Japanese car companies are investing heavily on hybrid technology, the Nissan Motor Corporation, a Japanese company, is joining the ranks of European car manufacturers by producing clean diesel engines for their vehicles.

Recently, Nissan announced that they have started the production of the Nissan QASHQAI. The QASHQAI is marketed in the United States under the name Rouge. It is a compact crossover sport utility vehicles and it will be Nissan’s diesel engined vehicle entry to the European auto market. The engine of the QASHQAI is a 2.0-liter dCi engine. The said powerplant is capable of producing 150 horsepower at 4,000 revs per minute.

One of its strongest selling points is its fuel efficiency. The engine has a gas mileage rating of 42.8 miles per gallon. That figure makes the Nissan QASHQAI one of the most fuel efficient vehicle in its class. Consumers will have a choice of transmission. Nissan offers a manual transmission and a six-speed automatic transmission which is considered to be an oddity in the compact crossover SUV class.

The diesel engine is the fruition of the collaboration between Nissan and its French partner Renault. The engine, according to Nissan, perfectly combines power and refinement. While the engine provides a high power output, it produces less sound than one would expect from a diesel engines. The smooth operation of the engine can even be compared to the gentle purring of a Nissan window motor.

What gives the engine a significantly quiet operation is the aluminum bedplate at the bottom of the engine. The said bedplate is designed to absorb much of the vibrations during operation. Other factors that contribute to the smooth and quiet operation of the engine are the twin counter rotating balancer shafts. It counters the vibration produced by the rotation of the crankshaft.

Nissan expects that the diesel engine will become the most popular engine amongst Nissan car buyers. With the performance, refinement, and good fuel efficiency, Nissan’s prediction is definitely within reach.
